Alabama's defensive line is about to get a major boost from a player who quietly put together one of the better seasons in the transfer portal.
USC transfer Devan Thompkins is positioning himself for a breakout 2026 campaign with the Crimson Tide, and the early signs point to a player ready to take over in the trenches.
Thompkins will step into the Bandit role in Kane Wommack's defense, the same spot LT Overton occupied after his own transfer from Texas A&M. That assignment will have him working primarily as a 3 and 5-technique along Alabama's front.
At 6-foot-5 and 298 pounds, the move from nose guard and defensive tackle at USC to a more versatile role in Tuscaloosa will be one of the more interesting position battles to track this offseason. Thompkins started all 12 games for the Trojans in 2025, finishing with 31 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and three sacks.
With Alabama dealing with significant turnover on the defensive line heading into 2026, the opportunity is there for Thompkins to establish himself as the leader up front. He has already shown the ability to collapse pockets and disrupt the pass rush, while also holding up well against the run.
If his production translates the way many expect, Thompkins could be one of the most important additions to Alabama's defense this season.
What are your expectations for Thompkins in Tuscaloosa this fall?
