Nick Saban Sends Strong Message About Alabama Crimson Tide After 56–23 Win Over Mississippi State
Nick Saban continues to keep a close eye on the Alabama Crimson Tide, and the former Alabama head coach had plenty to appreciate after Kalen DeBoer’s team delivered a statement victory on the road.

The No. 7 Alabama Crimson Tide dominated the No. 16 Mississippi State Bulldogs 56–23 on Saturday at Davis Wade Stadium, improving to 5–0 and producing one of its most impressive performances of the 2026 season.

The victory was especially significant because Alabama was facing a ranked Mississippi State team in a difficult road environment. Before the game, Saban had warned that trips to Starkville were among the toughest challenges Alabama could face.

Saban’s message proved prophetic in one sense: Alabama did not simply survive the environment — the Crimson Tide eventually took complete control of the game.

Alabama Responds With a Dominant Performance

Alabama scored 14 points in every quarter and finished the afternoon with 483 total yards. The Crimson Tide also forced four Mississippi State turnovers while limiting the Bulldogs to 302 total yards.

The defensive performance was particularly impressive.

Alabama consistently pressured Mississippi State quarterback Kamario Taylor, recording five sacks and forcing him into multiple mistakes. The Crimson Tide defense also held Mississippi State to just 18 rushing yards on 30 attempts.

That level of physical dominance is exactly the type of performance Alabama fans have been waiting to see from DeBoer’s program.

Keelon Russell Continues to Take Another Step

Quarterback Keelon Russell was another major reason for Alabama’s success.

Russell completed 16 of 22 passes for 285 yards and three touchdowns without throwing an interception. He also added a rushing touchdown as Alabama's offense repeatedly found ways to attack the Bulldogs.

His development could become one of the biggest storylines surrounding the Crimson Tide as the season progresses.

After struggling with turnovers earlier in the season, Russell has now gone three consecutive games without an interception or lost fumble.

That growth has given Alabama another dimension heading into the most important portion of its schedule.

Saban’s Pre-Game Message Became Reality

Saban appeared on ESPN's College GameDay before the matchup and challenged Alabama to do more than simply win.

His message was centered on taking away Mississippi State's confidence and leaving no doubt by the fourth quarter.

Alabama ultimately did exactly that.

The Crimson Tide led 28–17 at halftime before pulling away in the second half. Mississippi State managed only six points after halftime, while Alabama continued adding touchdowns.

By the final quarter, Alabama had turned a competitive SEC matchup into a decisive victory.

Is DeBoer’s Alabama Starting to Look Different?

The biggest takeaway from the victory may be what it says about DeBoer’s program.

Alabama has faced criticism during DeBoer’s tenure, particularly when games against quality opponents became uncomfortable late. Against Mississippi State, however, the Crimson Tide showed the ability to take control and finish emphatically.

Alabama’s 56-point performance, combined with its defensive pressure and ability to close the game, offered another indication that this team may be developing into the type of complete contender DeBoer envisioned.

Interestingly, DeBoer has now reached a 25–8 record through his first 33 games at Alabama — the same record Nick Saban had through his first 33 games with the Crimson Tide.

That comparison does not mean DeBoer will duplicate Saban’s historic success, but it does provide an intriguing statistical backdrop as Alabama continues its 2026 campaign.

Georgia Now Awaits Alabama

The Crimson Tide will not have much time to celebrate.

Alabama’s next challenge is arguably its biggest of the season: a showdown with No. 2 Georgia on October 10.

That matchup will provide an even greater test of whether Alabama has genuinely turned a corner under DeBoer.

For now, though, the Crimson Tide has sent a powerful message.

Alabama went into one of the SEC's most difficult road environments, faced a ranked opponent and left Starkville with a 56–23 victory.

And if this performance is any indication, the Crimson Tide may be building something special in Tuscaloosa.
