Youri Tielemans to Manchester United: Release Clause Triggered as £35m Deal Nears Completion
Manchester United are on the verge of completing a surprise midfield signing, with Youri Tielemans set to leave Aston Villa for Old Trafford after United triggered the Belgian's release clause.
Deal Reaches Advanced Stages
Manchester United are in the final stage of talks between all parties to sign Tielemans, who has turned down interest from other clubs in favour of a move to Old Trafford. A full agreement is now reportedly in place, with United activating a €41m release clause in Tielemans' Aston Villa contract and reaching a verbal agreement with the Belgian midfielder himself.
The release clause figure varies slightly depending on the report, with some pegging it at £35m and others at £35–40m. Tielemans is expected to undergo his medical this week ahead of signing his contract to officially become a United player.
Why the Sudden Pivot to Tielemans?
This move comes as something of a curveball. United's midfield rebuild had been centered on Atalanta's Ederson, but United ended their pursuit of Ederson after the Brazilian failed a medical last week, despite having agreed a move prior to the World Cup. With that deal collapsing, attention swiftly turned to Villa's Belgian international.
United have already finalised a deal for Chelsea's Andrey Santos, and the Tielemans move comes as part of a broader push for midfield reinforcements this summer.
Tielemans' Case for Old Trafford
The 29-year-old has been a key figure for Villa in recent seasons. He scored in Villa's 3-0 Europa League final win over Freiburg and was instrumental as Belgium reached the World Cup quarter-finals, though he missed Belgium's 2-1 defeat to Spain through an injury picked up in the warm-up. He made 35 appearances for Villa last season, contributing two goals and seven assists.
Villa's Response: Reinforcements Already in Place
Aston Villa aren't left empty-handed. The club had already finalised a deal to sign Freiburg's Johan Manzambi before the Tielemans exit, though he's viewed more as an attacking midfielder, meaning Villa may need to search for a more defensive option if Tielemans departs.
Villa reportedly wanted to keep Tielemans and even offered him a new contract, but the release clause left them with little leverage. The Belgian is set to become the third player to leave Villa permanently this summer, following Donyell Malen and Enzo Barrenechea.
