Michigan Lands Big Swimming Flip: Henry Anstine Ditches Minnesota Commitment for the Wolverines' 2027 Class

Michigan's swim program just pulled off a major recruiting win. Sprint freestyle standout Henry Anstine has flipped his verbal commitment from Minnesota to the University of Michigan, announcing he'll join the Wolverines' Class of 2031 in Fall 2027.

The Chester Springs, Pennsylvania native will link up with fellow commit Brody Reber in Ann Arbor, giving Michigan's freestyle group another talented piece heading into the next recruiting cycle.

Anstine brings a strong résumé to the Wolverines' roster. A rising senior at Malvern Prep School, he swept the 100 and 200 free at both the 2026 Eastern Interscholastic League Championships and the National Catholic High School Championships, a significant jump from his underclassmen finishes in those same events.

He also turned in a string of best times at the NCAP Katie Ledecky Invitational, medaling in the 50, 100, and 200 free, and posted top-five finishes in the 100 and 200 free at the NCSA Spring Championships.

Training year-round with the Suburban Seahawks Club, Anstine has shown steady, consistent time drops in his top events, exactly the kind of trajectory college programs look for in a sprint freestyle recruit.

The flip is a notable pickup for Michigan, a program that finished second at the 2026 Big Ten Championships and cracked the top eight at the NCAA Championships. Adding a proven sprint freestyler with room to keep improving gives the Wolverines added depth in one of collegiate swimming's most competitive event groups.

For Minnesota, it marks the loss of a recruit who was expected to address a thin spot in the Gophers' sprint free lineup, making this a swing that carries weight on both ends of the Big Ten.
